Designing more effective drugs
Drugs target and bind to proteins on the surface of a cell – these are known as receptors. The challenge for scientists is to find drug molecules that bind to a targeted receptor, but don’t affect other similar proteins. That’s one of the most important things in drug discovery.
Using AlphaFold in combination with physics-based software, pharmaceutical researchers have been able to precisely simulate these interactions. This could potentially allow scientists to design molecules that target receptors with exquisite accuracy.
